Ladakh, with all of nature’s bountiful blessings coupled with the man-made structures is truly an amazing destination. Its landscape resembles that of neighbouring Tibet, inhabited by Buddhists. The land is scattered with traditional mountain villages, barley fields, monasteries and palaces.
The majority Buddhist population is manifested in the numerous, awe-inspiring monasteries, which dot the land, and the colourful prayer flags blowing in the horizon. Most villages have monasteries, the centre of their socio-religious lives.
The high altitude lakes make great day trips out of Leh. Hire a jeep to Pangong Tso, and walk till Spangmik, the furthest point one is allowed on the Indian side. Visit the other neighbouring brackish water lakes such as Tso Moriri and Tso Kar.
Indulge in a trek, explore the mountain air, the villages, the nomads and their lifestyles. Experience the feeling of driving through the world’s highest motorable road at Khardun la (5,400m).
Visit the Nubra Valley, the most fertile in Ladakh and blest with the best weather. Go further into Deskit and Hunder, see the sand dunes of this cold desert, and the Bactrian, double-humped camels.
Visit the Muslim area of Ladakh in Kargil. Drive through Drass, alleged to be the second coldest inhabited place in the world, the town that suffered heavy casualty during the Pakistani incursion in 1999.
