Ladakh Trekking RegionsLamayuru :: Padum Alchi Trek :: Nubra Valley Trek :: Frozen Zanskar Trek |
Ladakh is a trekker’s paradise, with numerous trails to choose from – for the beginner as well as for the professional. One condition necessary for all though, is acclimatization. Being a high altitude area, it is necessary to allow the body to get used to the climactic conditions. Spend a couple of days walking around Leh and its monasteries, gradually increasing distances covered to nearby Gompas (monasteries).
Physical preparedness and training, through appropriate exercise should start as far as three months ahead of a trek, as certain fitness levels must be met to undertake anticipated levels of strenuous activity, within which highlighted areas include physical strength, stamina and lung capacity.
The trekking season is roughly between May and October. In May though, one can still expect snowfall, and in June and July, the rivers are full due to the melting snow. The ideal season therefore is from August to early September.
If one is not sufficiently prepared with the right camping gear, there enough outlets in Leh from which one can hire or buy the appropriate items. It is important to equip oneself with the right clothing and gear as morning and evening temperatures are harsh. Carry enough food and water. The mid-day sun can be scorching and it is advisable not to trek then, as it can cause sunburn and dehydration.
